Biopsies

Biopsies

If you have an abnormality on your skin that might indicate something more serious, then a medical provider will perform a skin biopsy for further examination. The biopsy removes a small sample of skin that can be used to check for illnesses including infections, chronic skin disorders, or cancer.

Note: Skin biopsies are common procedures, and are often done as a precaution. If a biopsy does indicate cancer or other condition, it’s important to remember that most skin cancers, when caught early, can be successfully treated. If a biopsy is recommended, don’t delay in getting it.

ZG Wellness can perform biopsies at the request of other physicians. If we spot something that could be a problem, we will also recommend a biopsy.

The biopsy procedure can be done in several ways. A shave biopsy removes a small sample of skin with a razor. An excisional biopsy uses a scalpel to remove the sample. A punch biopsy uses a special tool to extract a sample.

The biopsy procedure is typically painless. You do not need to do anything to prepare for it. An injectable anesthetic is used to numb the area. Then the medical provider will take the sample. The procedure only takes a few minutes.

Afterward, the area is bandaged. In some cases, stitches may be needed. There may be some bleeding and some soreness after the anesthetic wears off, but these are minor. The area biopsied will typically heal in a couple of days.

Results from the biopsy are usually available within a couple of days. You will be notified of the results, along with recommendations for any additional treatment.
